Slang and Abbreviations.....

There is so much slang and so many abbreviations in the world of warcraft anyone would be forgiven for thinking the game had its own language! While there are actually other languages in the game, we're not going to go there in this guide, for the most part you will see what is spoken in plain English.

WoW = World of warcraft - copyright blizzard entertainment! <3

AFK = Away from keyboard

BRB = Be right back

LOL = Laughing out loud

ROFL = Rolling on the floor laughing

MT = Mistell (if a player sends you a tell meant for someone else for example)

LFG = Looking for group

LF1M = Looking for 1 more (sometimes they will be LF2M.. looking for 2 more etc)

NPC = Non player character (like a vendor or a monster)

Mob = An NPC, usually a bad thing that you are trying to kill or going to kill

Proc = short for Programmed Random Occurrence, eg; describing a weapon/trinkets chance on hit

DoT = damage over time (a spell that you cast, then it continues to damage its target for a set amount of time

Chat channels are split into areas, for example, the area you start in as a human is called Elwynn forest, you will probably notice people talking and maybe you want to add something or ask a question, don't just press enter and start typing like i did! That will limit your conversation to 'say' and will only be heard by those who are near to your character.

Press enter, you will see a text box open, type /1 then leave a space, you will see 'say' changes to 'general - elwynn forest' then after the space whatever you want to say and then everyone in the zone will be able to see what you type. As you change zones, the channel change with you. If you find it is getting distracting, or annoying (some people sure have a lot of opinions) you can leave the channel by typing /leave 1 then pressing enter again. To rejoin that channel you will need to type /join general.

When you go to a major city there is another channel called 'trade' to use the trade channel you type /2 much like talking in general except the trade channel is linked to all the major cities of your faction and is meant for buying, selling and trading.

Other channels of interest are /p which is what you use to talk in a group or party (see 'dungeons' for more information on groups). /g is what you use to type in your guild channel if you are in a guild, /y is similar to /say but with a wider range (its a yell) and the text will be red, /w or /t means to whisper or tell a player in private, you type /w playername and then you will send a tell to that person which only they will see. To reply to a whisper that you receive, press r.
